The requirements for college are actually some of the lightest, as most of what you do is browse for information/email/course work and word processing.
What you need to look are also the other factors, such as battery life, weight, and what you are going to use it for.
Netbooks : Great for portability, great battery life (up to 7-10 hours in same cases), all in one unit. Negatives : Small keyboard, Small screen, No CD/DVD drive.
Laptops: all around great, however they can be a bit larger and heavier.
I would look for a $500 laptop from either HP, Dell, or toshiba
    try to get :
    Core 2 duo
    3 gigs memory
    good luck

I like Toshiba, Sony, and maybe the HP/Compaq line. You can find these at Office Depot, Staples, Best Buy.
If you’re patient, I’ve seen Office Depot beat everyone’s prices on Toshiba laptops. I’m partial to Toshiba because I’ve used them in business for years and they built to last and can take a lot of travel abuse. Most people don’t think about Toshiba because it’s not a “younger generation” brand (like Dell, etc…) BUT it’s a workhorse.
I’ve bought 4 different laptops for me/family over the past 2 years and have gotten 3 Toshibas and 1 Sony. I did not pay over $579 for any of them. 1 was $459, 1 was $525, 1 was $549, 1 was $579.
All 4 were 1-3mb memory, dual-core, 1.8-2.0 mhz, 160gb-250gb hard drive, 15.4″ widescreen, 3-4 USB ports, media drive for camera cards, etc…
Just be a little patient, visit some local stores, ask them about when their sales are starting, look in Sunday papers for the sales notice, etc…

If you are buying a laptop for college then lenovo/IBM is best company.
Lenovo/IBM- best computer manufacturer ever IBM is very well known and affordable with quality built long lasting laptops, just ask nasa, the FBI, Boeing all use Lenovo/IBM even in space the IBM T43p is used on the ISS.
Look at the IBM thinkpad line they come in quality build, are powerful, sturdy, come with spill proof keyboard-very very helpful, simple design, portable, very reliable, great batterylife, can do a little bit of everything and best of all are affordable.
Also don’t buy a netbook, the lack of the CD/DVD drive can be the most annoying thing ever instead if you buy a laptop like the
Lenovo/IBM Think pad X200’s you get a 12.1 inch screen and a HDD but i still reccomend buying a 14.1 inch screen laptop as they are a lot cheaperhttp://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/contr?

It’s always a good idea to check with the school/former students to see if there’s a particular kind of laptop or operating system that they recommend for you to get.
Other than that, the decision is really up to you. I’d definitely agree that you want something portable, though. There?s a new application called ?Laptop Scout? (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows? that you might find useful. You basically go to the site, input what you want to use the laptop for, then factor in your budget, and it?ll provide you with a list of systems that match up.
You can put an emphasis on portable systems, and a ton of different laptops will pop up for you. I hope it’s useful, good luck on your search!

No college in their right mind can enforce a brand loyalty to a computer company.
Anyway, a netbook may be right up your alley. There light, affordable, and have a extremely long battery life.
This unit I suggested for you has the longest battery life on the market–(9) hours. No other netbook or laptop can beat that, and if you buy with that seller, you will save $27 (retails for $400).http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie?
I hope this information was useful for you. Best answer, please.

Some colleges DO want you to have a certain laptop/notebook.
If yours allows you to choose, I’d get a Dell for many many reasons.
